Here are some web-based caregiving resources that cover a wide range of important issues:
You might want to start with the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers or the Philadelphia Area Chapter of Geriatric Care Managers. A Geriatric Care Manager is an experienced guide and resource for families of older adults and others with chronic needs. A geriatric care manager has a specialized focus on issues related to aging and elder care.
Geriatric care managers work privately with older adults and their families to create a plan of care that meets the needs of the older adult. They will meet with you to help you understand your loved one's needs and to learn what resources and options are available. Other great resources include:
AARP is a nonprofit, membership organization for people age 50 and over.
Eldercare Locator, a service of the U.S. Administration on Aging, helps older adults and their caregivers find local services for seniors.
FirstGov For Seniors has been created by the Social Security Administration (SSA) for Seniors as a service especially geared toward senior citizens to provide them with better access to government services and benefits.
Healthfinder is a Federal Web site, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, useful as a resource for finding government and nonprofit health and human services information on the Internet.
Medicare Eligibility provides information on Medicare eligibility and enrollment with the use of a new Medicare Eligibility Tool.
National Energy Assistance and Referral (NEAR) project provides information on where individuals can apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Their toll-free phone number is 1-866-674-6327 or send an e-mail to energyassistance@ncat.org
National Institute on Aging (NIA) strives to improve the health and well-being of older Americans through research.
Nursing homes gives information related to Medicaid and Medicare certified nursing homes. It includes information on payment and resident rights and a checklist to help when evaluating nursing homes.
Pennsylvania Department of Aging is an advocate for the interests of older Pennsylvanians at all levels of government.
Social Security Administration links to Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
Department of Veterans Affairs describes programs and services offered by U.S. Veterans Administration.
