Redefining Middle Age
A six-month study of civic engagement among Delaware County residents age 55+
The estimated value of time donated annually by 33,000 Delaware County volunteers is $36 million, according to a report soon to be released by the Delaware County Community Foundation (DCCF). The dollar equivalent of donated time is based on the foundation 's estimate that at least 25% of the County's 132,000 residents age 55+ volunteer an average of five hours a month.
Titled "Redefining Middle Age," the six-month study of civic engagement among County residents age 55+ was conducted by the foundation in conjunction with the County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA). Coming of Age and AARP PA also partnered with DCCF to reach the County's 132,000 residents age 55+ .
"Communication was the number one issue raised by the hundreds of residents who participated in the study, " says Richard J. Anthony, Sr., executive director of DCCF. "A plausible conclusion, therefore, is that if more of our 55+ residents know about the needs and opportunities for volunteers in the County, the economic value to the community would increase dramatically. Imagine the services 50,000 or more experienced, skilled people could provide in our schools, health care centers, and other community service organizations. That's the challenge that has to be taken up by a consortium of for profit, nonprofit and government organizations."
Coming of Age sponsored a Boomers Night Out! series of public meetings June 7 as part of DCCF's commitment to report the findings of the study to the community.
