Welcome to Coming of Age: Kansas City

Coming of Age: Kansas City is a metro-wide initiative, led by Shepherd's Center Central, which promotes civic involvement, lifelong learning, and community leadership in the 50+ population.

Through the Coming of Age: Kansas City initiative, those 50+ will discover inspiring opportunities to explore passions and engage in meaningful service throughout the Kansas City community.

Coming of Age: Kansas City will transform the talents, experience, and wisdom of those 50+ to enrich the community and contribute to its greater good, by:

  • Empowering those 50+ as they plan for the future
  • Promoting paid and unpaid work, lifelong learning, and community leadership among the 50+
  • Working with nonprofits to recruit, train, and retain 50+ volunteers

With the support of our community partners, Shepherd's Center Central is proud to introduce this initiative to the Kansas City area.

Barbara Potts..."I am grateful I attended a workshop back in the 1970’s where the speaker encouraged those in attendance to “say YES to life!”  He asked if we had ever known two older people:   one who never took any adventurous steps in life, always playing it safe, and a second who had the courage to take educated risks and to “say yes” to life’s opportunities..." Click here to continue reading.

Kate Cefolia-Miller..."when I was in my early 20's and I participated in a Civil Rights march in which I was arrested.  The thing that makes this different from the others arrested at that time is I was a nun. I am now 66 years old..." Click here to continue reading.
