Csonka among generation's sports icons feeling their age

Larry Csonka tells a story about a reunion of his 1972 Miami Dolphins some years back. They spent hours trading stories about their aches and pains and hobbled knees. Then they boarded a bus bound for a night game to be trotted out for halftime huzzahs.

Csonka enjoyed the illusion of time travel as he rode in that darkened carriage. "The same guys who had always jawed at each other were jawing at each other," he says. "The voices hadn't changed. And for an instant it was like we stepped back to 1972 all over again.

Have We Got an Opportunity for You!

Adopt-a-Resident and become a friendly visitor with an older adult

Type: Unpaid

Become a friend to an elderly resident visiting, chatting, playing cards & other games, reading and writing letters, taking strolls around the campus or snacking in the cafe.

Some activities include:

  • 1:1 visits with resident(s)
  • read to resident(s) (books, mail, newspaper, magazine, etc.)
  • write letters for resident(s)
  • assist resident(s) to learn computer skills
  • attend outings with program staff to assist resident on a 1:1 basis (grocery, Starlight, museum, etc.)
  • escort resident(s) in house to Uhlmann library, Sarah’s Salon, leisure programs, therapy, art gallery and visit
  • provide 1:1 assistance at group programs (escort, assist residents)
  • escort resident(s) outside to porch or around grounds for visits, visit about synagogue news/community events
  • offer to help organize the items on their bulletin board
  • go out to the garden in the back of the facility
  • visit the Gift Shop

Volunteers must have a sociable personality and show compassion toward elderly. He/She must also have a timely and helpful personality.

Reality U Volunteer

Type: Unpaid

REALITY U needs volunteers to work booths in 4 sessions during the school day. Volunteers can work one or all of the sessions.

The booths are banking, housing, insurance, medical center, communications, shopping center, entertainment, transportation, supermarket, utilities, child care, chance, charitable giving and SOS. Volunteers are given all the materials and are trained before participating.

REALITY U will be at four high schools and one middle school: Harmon, Wyandotte, Schlagle, Washington and Northwest Middle School.

Skills

  • Mentor of life skills: Guide students through an assimilation of what life would be like for them by the age of 26 according to their current grade point average

Requirements

Training is available on December 2 at 10 am and 5:30 pm - more information at registration of your volunteer activity.

Able to arrive 30 minutes before desired sessions below -

Session 1 - 7:45 - 9 am

Session 2 - 9:15 - 10:20 am

Lunch 10:30 - 11 am

Session 3 - 11:40 - 12:35 pm

Session 4 - 1:00 - 2:05 pm

The National World War I Museum is seeking a full-time Curator of Education. The Curator of Education is primarily responsible for:

  1. Creating an overall education program strategy for public programs, distance learning and school programs
  2. Researching, developing and implementing specific programs across multiple disciplines using a variety of delivery methods and technologies to achieve this goal.

The essential first year goal will be to oversee the creation and implementation of a major (foundation funded) distance learning program.
