Storytelling and Health

The Annals of Internal Medicine just published the results of a new trial that provides evidence that storytelling is not only an enjoyable pastime, but shows promise as way to decrease high blood pressure. And for at least one group of patients, listening to personal narratives worked as effectively as additional medications. The researchers studied 300 African-American patients who lived in urban areas, had hypertension, and viewed videos every three months of other patients telling their personal stories. This is a story with a happy ending!

The Power of Immigrant Elders' Stories

At a recent gathering in North Philadelphia, 99-year-old Isabel Silva held the rapt attention of an audience of immigrant elders as she talked about her life and gift of healing. This gathering, part of a Coming of Age-sponsored digital storytelling program for older Hispanic immigrants, included questions and answers from City Councilwoman Maria Quiñones Sánchez. Programs in the Southeast Asian and Korean communities are also providing opportunities for elders to share their rich life experiences and culture. Click here for The Philadelphia Inquirer story.

Storytelling Creates Community

Among Carl Jung’s seven tasks of aging is to find meaning in one’s life; pulling together  memories – piece by piece, great and small – into a coherent storyline is one way to capture the journey and create a legacy. The Elder Storytelling Place provides a gathering place for people 50+ to share stories about their lives and "meet" others whose experiences will enlighten and inspire.
